People. The characters are designed to compliment one another. Aang is the youthful hero, the core as it were. Sokka is the comic relief guy who comes through in a pinch. Toph is the abrassive newbie, the grist which keeps the gears of conflict turning. Katara is the one who holds the group together, an anchor really.
Now, all of them show well-roundedness as well, good stuff. I personally think Toph is the more interesting character, to the point I think the show should be called Toph: the Blind Earthbender instead, but Katara has her moments. (The Water Scroll and the Chase are classic examples.)
